Itinerary
Day 01: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Wayllabamba
We will begin with the pick-up of our passengers around 05:30 am. from their respective hotels and we will begin a spectacular panoramic tour of the mythical Sacred Valley of the Incas with beautiful views of the Urubamba River, picturesque Andean towns and the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo. In Piscacucho, at kilometer eighty-two, we will meet the rest of the crew and the porters who will carry our camping equipment. This point is where our hiking route begins, it is also the location of the first official checkpoint of the Inca Trail. The walk begins with a gentle climb following the course of the river, the first three hours we will walk through relatively flat terrain where we can see magnificent views of the snow-capped peak of Wakay Willka known as Veronica, as well as the Urubamba mountain range that divides the jungle and the Andes. After lunch, we will continue the walk to the extensive Inca settlement of Llactapata (Patallacta on some maps) and appreciate the impressive agricultural terraces of this complex. The Inca Trail follows the left bank of the river to the town of Wayllabamba at (3000 meters above sea level) where we will enjoy our dinner and spend the first night camping.
Day 02: Wayllabamba – Warmiwañuska – Pacaymayo
The next day we will wake up early and prepare for today’s hike, which many consider to be the most difficult. We must complete a steep ascent that reaches an altitude of (4200 masl) at the Warmi Wañuska pass. After breakfast, departure from the camp will be around 07:00 hrs. On the hike we will have the opportunity to see several species of birds and if we are lucky we may see hawks, hummingbirds or black-chested eagles.
The last hard climb will take us directly to the highest pass of the Inca trail at Warmi wañuska. Remember to have a warm jacket and hat handy when you reach this altitude, as temperatures can drop drastically. After a well-deserved rest, we will continue crossing the slopes on the left side of the valley until we reach our camp at Pacaymayo (3600 masl), approximately 6 – 7 hours of walking.
Day 03: Pacaymayo – Puyupatamarca – Wiñay Huayna
This will possibly be the longest day of hiking the Inca trail, but one that will bring splendid scenery and views. Around 06:00 hrs. we will prepare to begin our trek with a steady ascent to the second highest pass at Runkuracay, reaching (3780 masl) and passing through a circular Inca checkpoint that occupies a commanding position with a spectacular view of the Vilcabamba mountain range.
We recommend the use of trekking poles, additional gel insoles and perhaps an additional porter. We will pause at this archaeological complex for a tour and explanation. We will then continue through the cloud forest full of orchids, hanging mosses, etc. Past the Inca tunnel, a gentle climb will take us to the third pass (3700 masl), which offers incredible views of several snow-capped peaks, including Salkantay (20574 ft / 6271 m) and Veronica (18865 ft / m). 5750m).
Near the pass are the impressive ruins of Phuyupatamarca (cloud level village). We will have a brief explanation of the mysteries of Inca architecture, before continuing to visit the impressive agricultural site of Intipata and up to the third and last camp at Wiñay huayna located at (2700 masl). Wiñay huayna, named after a variety of pink orchid that grows here, is the last official campsite before Machu Picchu (approximately 7 hrs. hike).
Day 04: Wiñaywayna – Machu Picchu – Cusco
Today we will start earlier than usual, we will have breakfast at 04:00 hrs and say goodbye to our porters. We will wait at the checkpoint and access to Intipunku to cross the road that is narrow and brings an almost vertical ascent of about 50 steps to La Puerta del Sol (2719 meters above sea level). All our efforts up to this point will be rewarded with an unforgettable view against a backdrop of natural beauty and forested peaks that frame the magical city of Machu Picchu.
We will have plenty of time to take pictures of the lost city of the Incas. The guided tour is 2 hours and a little more exploration on your own. The shuttle bus ticket from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes is included, it departs every 15 minutes and will be available for us to descend. The train ticket is included and leaves at 18:20 hrs. and we will be arriving in Ollantaytambo at approx. 20:05 hrs. there we will be provided with the transfer from this location to the city of Cusco.
